{Final 1st Grade Project}

Over the weekend, Trav had his final project to complete as a big 1st grader. He had to put together his very first book report. He was so excited about the project. He thought really hard about what book he wanted to use. He went back and forth for a few days on a couple of his favorite books. I told him that he had to make his final decision by Friday so that we could get whatever we needed after his game on Saturday.

On Friday he brought me the book of his choice. I have to admit, I was a little shocked at first. I was expecting one of his Lego City books or maybe even a Splat the Cat book. I never expected him to bring me The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Raise her hand if you know just how much I adore Eric Carle. Keep your hand up high in the air if you know that The Very Hungry Caterpillar is my all time favorite book written by Eric Carle. Shhhhh don’t tell him but I was a little giddy inside about his book choice.

On Saturday after his last soccer game, Trav and I went on a nature walk to find a few things for his project. We spent some time reading the book. I showed him some videos and pictures on the lifecycle of a butterfly. He’s a science kid so he was pretty fascinated by the videos we watched.

Mother’s Day was spent sitting at the table with my little guy watching and helping him but only when needed (he’s very adamant about that). He had a rubric to follow so we put our heads together and came up with a plan. We talked about what happened in the book and put that together with what we learned through our butterfly lifecycle research.

The final project:

Today Trav will present his very first oral book report to his class which will be recorded by his teacher. He has been practicing and practicing. I asked him if he wanted me to record him so that he could watch himself and he really liked the idea and of course I just had to share it =)
