Deck the Door

I think I left you all hanging long enough :-) I'm finally getting around to posting some of the pictures from the big Deck the Door contest that was held at the school a couple of weeks ago.

In case you don't remember all of the details, the school held a contest to see who could decorate the best door. Each grade was given a book title. Kindergarten received The Sweet Smell of Christmas, first grade received The Polar Express, and fifth grade received T’was the Night Before Christmas.

The Sweet Smell of Christmas

The kinder kids in Mrs. Procell’s class got to help by painting the gumdrops for the top of the gingerbread house. They also got to create different candy pieces to decorate the door. Travin’s favorite activity was making his present to put under the Christmas tree. We were a little late on joining in on all of the fun in Travin’s class with the switch and all but, his teacher made sure that he had an active role in everything that was going on.

The Polar Express

I had the privilege of planning and decorating Kalyssa’s door along with the two other room moms for Mrs. Everage’s class. This was the first year I had ever participated in an event like this and I have to say, it was a lot of fun. The best part of the whole project was being able to go in and help the kids make their own train carts. They all got their plans together and then used their first grade thinking skills. The outcome was absolutely incredible! They all did such a great job. The Everage Express was a huge success. It won first place among the first grade hallway. The first grade hallway was also the overall winner for the whole school.

T’was the Night Before Christmas

Bryanna was one of the big helpers for Mrs. Cotton’s fifth grade door. When I popped in to see how things were going, Mrs. Cotton told me that she didn’t have a creative bone in her body (math is her strong suit). She grabbed a couple of her creative students to help her brainstorm some ideas. The class really worked together to create a little magic for their door. Their magic went a long way because Mrs. Cotton’s door was the big winner for the fifth grade hallway.

One of my favorite things about this project was that all of the students were able to participate. The teachers really wanted the students to have a part in everything that was going on. I think this made it extra special for them because the contest ended up being a pretty big deal. Family and friends were invited to browse the hallways this past week and everyone was recognized for their hard work.
