As a kid, my parents always made sure that every holiday was unique. They always went out of their way to make sure that every occasion was marked with a little something special. I still have so many of the things that they have given me throughout the years. Each little thing has found a special place somewhere in my home. My parents are extraordinary people and their way of doing things has always made life a little sweeter.
Today is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day became a family affair the year Bryanna was born. Over the years, the whole reason for Valentine’s Day was to have an extra special heart day with the kids. We usually spend time making a lot of crafts and cute treats. One of my favorite things to do with the kids each year is to sit in the middle of the living room floor and read all of the Valentine’s they received at school. We count to three and they all dump out their bags. This year was the first year that all three kids got to read their Valentine’s on their own. I have to admit, it was pretty GREAT to just sit and listen to them!!!
Jason and I usually try to mark each holiday with a little something special. Nothing extravagant or over the top, we just like to throw in a few special moments here and there.
This morning, I woke up earlier than usual. I made a special heart day breakfast. We chatted a little about Valentine’s Day and then eventually made our way into our normal weekday routine. I made my way back home after dropping the kids off at school and making a pit stop at the gym. Today was one of those days were my head was spinning out of control. There was so much to do and so little time in the day. I was finishing up some last minute chores when my doorbell rang. When I opened my door, this is what I saw
I am 31 years old and my parents still find the time to make me feel special. In honor of Valentine’s Day, my parents sent me some flowers wrapped in a "Hershey’s hug". Needless to say I had to go re~apply some more makeup before I was able to make my way out the door.
Looking back at my childhood, I realize that my parents are the ones who taught me how to enjoy the little things in life. They taught me how to embrace the things around me because that is exactly how they live their lives. My parents are two of the most generous people I have ever met. They will literally give you their hearts without asking for anything in return. I am so grateful that they helped pave my path in life. As their daughter, I now get to pass on my memories and experience those same moments with my children.

I love Kalyssa's essay! That's such a keeper!
ReplyDeleteThis post is so cute. I love how Valentine's day has become a family affair, that's how I want to be when we start our own family. My parents are the same way, they love to do a little something special for every holiday (or sometimes for no reason at all). This is something that my husband is not quite used to yet (his family is the complete opposite), but I think it's rubbing off on him :)
ReplyDeleteHow sweet :) I love that essay ;) My parents did the same thing with us when we were growing up, which is probably where I get my famous "tradition" trait from. My hubby on the other hand, not so much. His family was/is the complete opposite of mine. It sounds like everyone had a great V-day over there ;) That is a great tradition to start with reading all the Valentines Cards. Gotta remember that for next year ;)
